What’s the best way to take care of your skin in autumn?

Autumn-time is when the evenings draw in and you can get cosy by the fire. Autumn is a time for hot chocolate and pumpkin soup too…but it’s also when it gets cold and windy, and that’s what makes your skin dry and lacklustre. So what can you do to help your skin get through the mid-season period ? We’re here to explain everything !

Impacts of autumn on skin, and on the body

Our skin evolves with the seasons, and that’s why it’s important to tweak your routine in line with every season of the year. Autumn is when it gets cold and windy – with direct consequences for the body.

The body starts to focus on delivering heat to our vital organs: the heart, the brain, the kidneys, and the lungs. Consequently, micro-circulation to the skin is reduced - as is sebum production. That means that the skin gets less protection and less hydration. The wind will also irritate the cutaneous barrier that will therefore be less well-protected. As autumn arrives, the entire body experiences the seasonal change – and that can mean viral infections, seasonal fatigue, and even sleep disruption.

So what can you do?

Given the impacts of autumn, your skin needs hydration and your body needs some support ! So what can you do to prepare yourself for the coming autumn and winter ? Well – here’s the answer ;)

Hydration: the key to good skin

Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate ! It’s the ONE thing you should be doing every single day to protect your skin. Hydration is achieved first and foremost by drinking water – yes, drinking water is vital to having beautiful skin ! When you hydrate your body you stop the epidermis from drying out and the skin becomes more elastic and luminous. Hydration is critical to getting lovely soft skin.

It’s also essential that you hydrate the skin from the outside. To achieve that, we like to have a routine that involves the use of active ingredients and plant-based oils that nourish your skin, and that protect the cutaneous barrier. That’s why we recommend the adoption of the minimalist ZiZAN!A routine that has a high concentration of active ingredients and delicate textures. It’s the perfect skin hydration combination !

STEP 1: Seeds of Glow, our unique 3in1

For: normal to dry skin, including sensitive skin, in need of a glow

The autumn routine starts with Seeds of Glow, our new 3-in-1 multifunctional cleanser-mask-scrub ! The gel is rich in plant oil and cleans the skin gently, helping to nourish it and protect the cutaneous barrier. We added Alpine super-flowers to ingredients taken from our gardens to create a treatment that has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, and that also helps prevent body fluid build-up as well as ensuring that the epidermis’s dead cells are removed.

STEP 2: Hydraphoria, your ally for mornings and evenings

For: normal and dry skin that is starting to show signs of wrinkles
and fine lines linked to dehydration

Next, you hydrate the skin using Hydraphoria that is highly concentrated with regenerating active ingredients. Our Hydraphoria face cream contains nigella damascene (‘Love-in-a-mist’) and blue flax – exclusive ingredients from our organic gardens – that work fantastically with biosaccharides that are fermented to boost hydration and to combat early signs of ageing ! A real bonus is that it can be used day and night. Now you can get rid of all those jars of face cream cluttering up the bathroom shelf ! ;)

STEP 3: Flower Skin Power, THE ultimate skincare step

For: all skin types, including oily skin, needing a bit of TLC and balance

We round off the routine with the Flower Skin Power oil-serum, to lock in the hydration ! It’s made up of 100% beneficial plant oils including prune oil, flax oil and nigella oil. These ingredients nourish and plump up the skin, and improve its elasticity. They also help restore the cutaneous barrier and help protect the skin from external irritants. What’s more it’s our co-founder Anneleen’s hot pick, who recommends its use during the autumn period in particular.

Botanics to boost the body

Aside from hydration, the immune system needs back-ups too – and we turn to plants for that ! Lots of plants have a protective effect in boosting the immune system and strengthening natural defences. Let’s take a whistle-stop tour round our super-plants that are perfect at autumn-time !

Echinacea - to boost your immune system

Echinacea is one of the best-known medicinal plants for toning up the immune system, strengthening the body, and helping it fight off infection. It’s also the star ingredient in our tonic mist Self-Defense Floral Cocktail – together with tomato water, aloe vera, and prebiotics.

For: all kinds of skin in need of balance, protection and glow

A veritable cocktail of superfoods that’s packed with antioxidants to soothe and cleanse the skin, bringing that celebrated glow to the epidermis for a skin that’s luminous and in great health!

Lavender - to soothe you

Essential oil of lavender has been used in cosmetics for centuries. It promotes a feeling of tranquillity and wellbeing, and is the perfect way to relax and welcome in the autumn season with a sense of peace and calm. Here at ZiZAN!A, it’s found in our Happy Hands hand cream, among other things.

For: all skin types, including oily skin

Lavender is used for its relaxing, healing and regenerating properties. Essential lavender oil is combined with blue flax extract - an active ingredient upcycled from our organic seeds – for its powerful hydrating and protecting benefits to the skin: it’s an invitation to unwind.

Tulsi – to enjoy a feel of wellbeing

Tulsi, also known as Holy Basil, is an aromatic plant from the Indian sub-continent where it has been venerated for centuries for its medicinal use and for traditional and religious reasons. Holy basil is a plant that is widely acclaimed for its anti-infection properties - and it also purifies the skin and soothes the body and spirit. It is often used in Ayurvedic medicine - particularly for improving self-confidence, exploring your own potential, and achieving goals.

For: all skin types, including skin that is delicate, dry or allergen-sensitive

Tulsi leaves – that we harvest from our organic gardens – are used in limited editions of our Good Vibes from Tulsi soap. The cold-saponified soap that also contains essential Lavender oil is a great way to lather up a feel of wellbeing in the bathroom !
